Keeping it simple
At The General Assembly we believe in keeping it simple. Our philosophy: use high quality, well-sourced products; and don’t mess with what’s already a good thing. This is also reflected in the fit out designed by Six Degrees Architects.
We have an obvious affection for beer and we’re not shy about it. We are the only venue outside the brewery to list the full line up of Matilda Bay craft beers as well as, one-off seasonal brews on tap. We are also one of only a handful of venues in Australia where you can sample Unpasteurized Carlton Draught from copper Duo Tanks.

FOOD + DRINK
Beer at its simplest is brewed using only four ingredients and the dishes that our chefs have developed for our menu also follow this uncomplicated formula. This allows for a simple, yet full-flavoured eating experience.
Staying true to our philosophy, our drinks list also has a number of minimal intervention wines, including organic, bio-dynamic and preservative free options - in some cases all three.
The Josper grill
The General Assembly presents one of Melbourne’s best kept secrets - our Josper oven.
The Josper is an elegant combination of a grill and an oven in a single machine. More often than not, the Josper is described as an oven, though its primary role is a grill.
The Josper can work at high temperatures, sometimes up to 500 degrees Celsius, with ours continuously between 300-350 degrees daily.
Whether it be meat, seafood or vegetables, the Josper seals the product, imparting the most subtle smoky flavours.
It takes approximately an hour to get to temperature and can accommodate about 30 pieces of fish or meat simultaneously. The bars on the grill mark meat or produce attractively and cook it swiftly.
The Josper has been around for 40 years, created in 1970 in the North East of Spain by Josep Armangue and Pere Juli.
At present, we are using Australian Iron bark to fuel the Josper, but have previously used Plum wood to compliment some of our seafood and red meat dishes.
Located a stone’s throw from the CBD, next door to the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre and with impressive city skyline and riverfront views, The General Assembly is an ideal venue to hold your next function.
We have a mix of indoor and outdoor areas that can accommodate a variety of different functions and events. From stand up gatherings with drinks and canapés for 600 guests to a small group of 12 in our private dining room, we will make sure your experience is a memorable one. menu
